Finally, you need to evaluate your competition. You ideally want to find keywords that have volume, have buyers and have surmountable competition.
Rarely will you find a viable keyword that has no competition at all. Instead, what you’re looking for is competition that’s weak enough that you can overcome it with well executed SEO optimization.
Once you have the keyword, it’s time to get the website ready. This process is often referred to as on-page optimization.
On-page optimization isn’t difficult and usually entails making sure a few factors are taken care of. The whole process of on-page optimization can take as little as a week.
This is not where the bulk of the work is done. However, having poor on-page optimization can undermine all the off-page optimization work you do in the future. Spending time to do on-page optimization correctly in the beginning is time well spent.
Now you get into the nitty gritty of the ranking process. Different SEO companies will do this part of the process differently, but by and large the most important factor in getting ranked well is getting backlinks.
A good SEO company will get you a variety of different backlinks. You should get links from high quality, relevant websites. In other words, the links should be coming from established websites in the same market as you. You can also get a few lower quality websites pointing back to you, but those should always be counterbalanced by high quality links.
Sometimes the ranking process will happen gradually and steadily. Sometimes it’ll happen quickly and you’ll see your traffic spike overnight. Some tactics, such as directories and article backlinks, tend to work more slowly. Other tactics, like linkbaiting or getting links on high authority sites, can have an instant and dramatic impact.
If you watch your stats during this period you’ll often be able to see direct correlations between increased rankings and more traffic flowing into your website.
Finally, after choosing keywords, optimizing the website and doing a number of linkbuilding campaigns, it’s time to evaluate results.
What increase in rankings did you see? Did they meet, match or miss your expectations? Is the strategy working or does a different strategy need to be employed?
Often time’s the strategy may already be working and simply needs to be repeated to see results. Sometimes the strategy might need to be scaled up. In other words, if you’ve been getting 25 links a week from blogs, it might be time to ramp that up to 50.
On the other hand, you might discover that the tactics used so far just aren’t bringing in the desired results. In that case, the tactics need to be reevaluated and new tactics need to be chosen.
